Scapa Flow

Scapa Flow, Orkney, 1 July 1919

Returning from the Orkneys, Collingwood had a reminder of the recent war. The German fleet had surrendered and been confined by the British at Scapa Flow. On 21 June, the day Collingwood arrived in Sanday, the German Admiral von Reuter gave the order to scuttle the fleet before it could be taken over by the allies. Some, presumably including this ship sketched by Collingwood, were saved temporarily from sinking by beaching. Some still remain on the ocean floor to this day.
